The winning essay gives a very astute reading of John Stuart Mill’s remark on the dignity of standing for one’s convictions. It is historically and philosophically very well informed, its line of argument clear and articulate, and it evinces excellent craftsmanship. At the same time, the writer has infused the discussion with spirit—one senses a genuine comment here, real passion tempered by careful thinking. A worthy winner!

What is truth? What is the value of truth? The writer of this paper shows impressive familiarity with work on these questions, and also distinguishes clearly between the value of particular truths, and the question of the value of the idea of truth itself. There is philosophical sophistication here, and strong independent thinking. An excellent effort, and this year’s runner up!

This paper shows real originality and creativity in the way the author links the concepts of knowledge and power. Well written, with a nice philosophical twist.
Nr.4: Vilde Eriksen, Kristiansand katedralskole Gimle
A very thoughtful paper, bringing to light the more problematic sides of John Stuart Mill’s exhortation to fight for what one believes in.
Nr 5: Amund Tobias Måge Areklett, Kristelig Gymnasium (Oslo)
This paper conveys complex and interesting philosophical thoughts on the question of the nature and value of truth, but is able to do this in admirably direct and transparent language.

466 elever fra 45 skoler i 16 fylker deltok i årets NM i filosofi for vgs. 38 elever ble ifjor høst gjennom Baltic Sea Philosophy Essay Event kvalifisert for 2. runde 30. mars.
Filosofidagen for vgs (29.3.17) og NM filosofi for vgs har mottatt prosjektstøtte fra Stiftelsen Fritt Ord.
Medaljevinnerne vil få tilsendt ett bind av Vestens idehistorie sponset av Cappelen Damm. Alle ti finalistene vil få tilsendt diplomer.
